The History Of New Zealand

The History Of New Zealand

Hello! my name is Liyah, and This is my first blog post of 2020. Today I will be talking about The History Of New Zealand and how the Moriori became Maori people.
It all started when they were sailing on different islands and different countries. The person who spotted New Zealand is Abel Tasman he found it because of the giant octopus that were stealing their fish and James Cook named it Aotearoa which means in English New Zealand, The Maori people came from Indonesia or South Asia The Moriori are the same DNA as the Maori people

The Moa gone extinct because the Maori people eat a lot of them and the Moa only lay an egg up to 1-2 a YEAR that's why they extinct pretty quickly and don't have much of them. They arrived in New Zealand in several waves of waka (canoe) voyages somewhere between 1320 and 1350. The maori people got their food by killing fish and hunting for animals and making things to catch animals.

Thank you all for reading this I hope you learnt something from here :D! Bye have a nice day!

  1. Hi Liyah
Thanks for a great effort at recalling facts about the history of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
You have remembered that the first people to arrive in Aotearoa were chasing a giant octopus. But it wasn't Abel Tasman, it was a Maori man called Kupe.
The Maori people did come from Indonesia and South Asia, as well as other places like Hawaiki and Polynesia.
Some Maori people moved on to the Chatham Islands and became Moriori. Like you said, this was proved through DNA.
You have a good grasp of how the Moa went extinct, the number of Maori that arrived in Aotearoa and the way that they got their food.
    Ka pai!
