Kaiapohia Pa

Hi there, today I will be blogging about the siege of Kaiapohia Pa.

When did Maori establish Kaiapohia Pa?They established it in 1700 and was also built in the 1700 by Turakahutahi of the remaining Waitahstronghold. Like the Huriawa and Mapoutahi, was said to be built on a peninsula of the landaccessed by the narrow neck. On all other sides it was surrounded by the lagoon and the swamp.

Who was involved in the siege?Te Rauparaha was involved in the siege. In 1831 the Kaiapoi pa was attacked byTe Rauparaha and his northern flowers. Many people were killed as they all fled from the pasite through the surrounding swamplands. This attack was at the beginning of a dark time forNgai tahu with the loss of many people in a number of the further bloody battles.

Who was Te Rauparaha? Te Rauparaha was a Maori rangatira known as chief and a war leader of the Ngati toa tribe who took a leading part in the Musket of wars. He was the influential of the original sale of land to the New Zealand company, and was a participant in Wairau Affray in Marlborough.

What was Te Rauparaha feared from? Te Rauparaha soon became alarmed at the flood of the British settlers and refuse to sell any more of his land. This quickly led to a tension and the upshot was the Wairau Affray when a party from Nelson tried to arrest Te Rauparaha, and 22 of them were killed when they got fired upon Te Rauparaha and his people out of fear.

Where was Te Rauparaha from?

He was from Kawhia Harbour.
