Science crystals
Hurumanu - Crazy Crystals
Aim: To learn about a saturated solution and how to make crystals
Definition of solution:
A liquid mixture, when something is dissolved into a liquid (eg: sugar in water)
Definition of saturated:
Having or holding as much as can be absorbed of something (when no more sugar or borax can be dissolved into the water)
In groups of three you will make three different types of crystals and compare the results.
Ratio; 3 Tablespoons Borax per 1/2 cup water
Materials
1) Cup Popsicle sticks to mix
2) A cup 1/2 of warm water
3) String
4) Spoon
5) Borax
6) Pipe cleaner
6) Pipe cleaner
Process
Step 1: Get a cup.
Step 2: Get some borax and add 4 table spoons of borax into a cup.
Step 3: Add 1/2 of warm water in the cup .
Step 4: Mix them carefully until they have been dissolved .
Step 5: Get 4 pieces of pipe cleaners and make it into a star.
Step 6: Add the star that u make into the cup with the warm water make sure the pipe cleaner is touching the borax water ( do not put the whole thing inside, tie string into the Popsicle stick and let it dissolve the water into the pipe cleaner.
Sugar Crystals
Materials
1) Sugar
2) Plastic cup and a spoon
3) Popsicle stick
4) String
5) Warm water
Process
Step 1: Get a plastic cup and a spoon to mix.
Step 2: Add 4 table spoon of sugar into the plastic cup.
Step 3: Add 1/2 cup of warm water into the plastic cup.
Step 4: Mix them together until all of the sugar are dissolved.
Step 5: Get a string and tie it tight into the Popsicle stick.
Step 6: Put the string into the cup, leaving the Popsicle hanging to the cup.
Ratio: 4 Tablespoons salt to 1/2 cup water
Materials
1) Salt
2) Plastic cup and a spoon
3) Hot water
4) Popsicle stick string
5) String
Process
Step 1: Grab a plastic cup.
Step 2: Add 4 stable spoon of salt into the plastic cup.
Step 3: Add 1/2 of hot water into the plastic cup.
Step 4: Mix the ingredients together until its dissolved.
Step 5: Tie the string into the Popsicle stick tie it ti telly
Step 6: Put the string inside of the plastic cup, leaving the Popsicle hanging out of the plastic cup.
Findings
Describe your crystals in the table below.
Crystal Type
|
Shape
(Describe the shape) |
Size
(of individual crystals) |
Hardness
(Crumbly to Rock Hard) |
Borax
| The shape is a little bit off like a snowflake and it has a snowy texture and it acts like a snowflake | small | fragile |
Sugar
| The sugar make crystal and its a little bit big | a little bit big | fragile |
Salt
| the shape was spiky and its kinda sharp | miniature | fragile |
What crystals worked out best and why?:
Conclusion:
the very best crystal works is the borax one. and i really think its the borax one because it has a great texture and borax has different types of ingredients and it is the best ________________________________________________________________________
